Weekly COVID-19 cases up for fifth week; new way to count whos vaccinated: Coronavirus update for Thursday, – cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio For the fifth week running, the number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio increased, with case numbers rising from 7,511 last week to 8,557 this week, the Ohio Department of Health reported Thursday.

The Ohio Department of Health also changed how it reports the number of Ohioans who are vaccinated against COVID-19. Starting this week, the states COVID-19 dashboard reports the number of people who have received the updated vaccine that first became available in September.

The old dashboard noted how many people had received one or two shots of the old vaccine, which required two shots to give full protection. The updated vaccine delivers protection with just one dose.

This week, the new dashboard reported that 894,571 Ohioans have received the updated one-dose vaccine, representing 7.6% of the states population.

Please note the information provided on this dashboard represents the COVID-19 vaccinations that are being voluntarily reported to us, as reporting of the majority of COVID-19 vaccinations are no longer mandatory, the state said.

The total COVID-19 case count since early 2020 in Ohio has now reached 3,566,899.

There were 295 Ohioans newly hospitalized in the last week, raising the total since the beginning of COVID-19 in 2020 to 144,571.
