Severe weather ramping up allergies, while rhino virus circulates Central Texas – 25 News KXXV and KRHD

May 19, 2024

CENTRAL TEXAS (KXXV) These recent rains have done more than just damage properties and roads, but its ramped up peoples allergies.

But after speaking to a Baylor Scott and White doctor, 25 News learned that allergies are not the main reason that Central Texans are seeing their doctors right now.

I would say up to 30 to 40 percent of the cases that were seeing in an urgent care setting are due to rhino virus, or maybe another virus thats very similar" said Dr. Greg Newman DO.

Dr. Newman is the Medical Director for Central Texas Marketplace Convenient Care.

He says rhino virus is part of the common cold family but why are we seeing cases now in May during allergy season?

"It decided that it was going to be the virus of the month or the last few weeks, and so it should hopefully fade out here in the next few weeks," Dr. Newman said.

"We may be on to a a new virus thats circulating around, and thats kind of been the pattern since we've kind of gotten out of the big COVID waves.

Dr. Newman says allergy cases are actually down compared to last month, but these recent storms are flaring up peoples allergies."

Molds are always present in Texas because its usually kind of warm and humid in the Central Texas area, but particularly in the last few weeks, weve gotten a lot of rains so molds have really gone on the increase for allergies."

Dr. Newman says you can treat allergies caused by outdoor molds just as you would seasonal allergies, and for rhino virus the same as you would treat the common cold.

He says if that doesnt work go ahead and see a doctor especially if youre having lung issues, and maybe even a fever thats lasting multiple days.

Chester Zoo: Birth of critically endangered rhino calf dubbed ‘unusual’ by experts – Sky News

November 23, 2023

Wednesday 22 November 2023 22:41, UK

The birth of a critically endangered eastern black rhino has been dubbed "quite unusual" by experts at Chester Zoo.

The female calf - who remains without a name - was born on 12 November, and after a 15-month pregnancy, keepers at the zoo had been eagerly awaiting the new arrival.

But they were caught unawares when the birth happened right in front of their eyes, with the entire event caught on camera.

"It's quite unusual for a rhino to give birth in daylight hours," Emma Evison, rhino team manager, said.

"To be able to witness the calf safely entering the world, in front of our very own eyes, was just the most incredible privilege."

She said the calf is "very inquisitive and full of energy" and is "inseparable" with her mother Zuri.

"Little one is feeding regularly and already gaining in size and weight," Ms Evison said.

The eastern black rhino is classed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List, meaning it is facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

There are less than 600 found across Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, according to Chester Zoo.

Around 95% of rhinos in Africa have been wiped out by poaching, due to the demand for rhino horn, which stems from the traditional Asian medicine market, the zoo said.

European conservation zoos hope that with projects like the endangered species breeding programme, the numbers of rhino in the wild will gradually increase.

There has already been some success with one group of zoo-bred rhinos re-located to a protected National Park in Africa in 2019, the zoo said.

"Our efforts to protect this magnificent species extend far beyond the zoo's boundaries and, while it's incredibly positive news that conservation efforts across Africa have led to a small recovery in rhino numbers, giving some much-needed breathing space, we know there's still lots of work to be done," Mike Jordan, director of animals and plants at Chester Zoo said.

How to avoid respiratory infections in winter – IndiaTimes

November 2, 2023

With a cool nip in the weather, winter is finally here. Its the time of the year for food, festivities, and even vacations and trips. "While we enjoy this season and its festivities, we cannot ignore the fact that this winter also brings with it its ugly side and hence also referred to as flu season," says Dr. Sachin D Consultant - Interventional Pulmonology Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru. Respiratory infections like the common cold (Rhinitis) and Flu are very common in wither season. These infections are mostly caused by viruses although this can lead to secondary bacterial infections and pneumonia. Dr. Sachin shares valuable information on common cold, the symptoms and preventive measures for it.

Common cold presents as runny or stuffy nose, sneezing and might lead to sore throat and coughing. Symptoms usually last for a few days to a week. Flu presents as fever with chills, extreme fatigue, body ache along with cold. Symptoms may last for a few weeks. Without proper care these may cause complications like bronchitis (infection of airway causing yellow phlegm and wheezing), Pneumonia (Infection in lungs causing chest congestion and breathing difficulty), worsening of underlying medical conditions (Asthma, heart, and lung diseases), dehydration, ear and sinus problems.

Since most of these infections are caused by viruses like Rhino virus, Adeno virus, Respiratory syncytial virus, Influenza, and parainfluenza virus among others, these can be highly contagious and spread from person to person via aerosols or contact. When a person coughs or sneezes, the droplets release into the air carry viruses which get inhaled by nearby contacts leading to spread of infection. It can also spread by close contact and fomites (used handkerchiefs, towels etc.)

Strokes are more common in women: Signs every woman should pay attention to

Keep your health at check. If you notice any changes in routine health or symptoms of early flu, consult your specialist.

Avoid stress and take adequate rest.

Its best to eat home food and avoid outside or street foods this season.

Adequate hydration is to be maintained.

Eat lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits to keep antioxidants ample in your body to fight infections.

Keep your immunity good by a healthy diet and regular exercises.

Wear a mask in public places/ crowded gatherings, preferably a surgical mask or at least a cloth mask.

Cover your nose and mouth when coughing/sneezing. Use a tissue or your elbow and not hands. Always wash your hands after coughing, sneezing, or blowing nose. Used tissues to be discarded immediately.

Wash hands often with soap and water, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. Alcohol based sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) can be used when there is no access to soap and water.

Avoid touching nose, mouth, and eyes.

Stay away from people who has respiratory infections and limit close contact with others if you are sick.

Avoid sharing personal items such as handkerchiefs, towels etc.

Avoid social gatherings and crowds during this season.

Maintain a clean-living environment.

Avoid smoking and dont let people smoke near you.

Ideally should be taken care in separate rooms if feasible.

Care givers to maintain proper hand hygiene.

Proper disinfection of home at regular intervals

Care givers to wear mask when encountering sick person.

Maintain social distancing 3-6 feet.

Avoid close contact like shaking hands, touching, kissing, hugging etc. except as necessary to give care and support.

Influenza vaccine: Commonly called flu shot protects from Influenza. New influenza vaccines are produced every year to cover up for the change in the viral strains that happen naturally. This vaccine is available as quadrivalent to cover the most comer influenza strains of viruses. This vaccine is given annually during the flu season (October- December) to the target people. This vaccine can be taken by all healthy adults and is mandatory for those with chronic heart/lung conditions. Consult your doctor for the need of this vaccine which can reduce the flu rates by 80-90 %.

Pneumococcal vaccine: There are 2 types of pneumococcal vaccine which protects from Streptococcus pneumoniae (bacteria) which can lead to pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis. This is a severe lung infection which starts as sore throat and spreads rapidly to lungs and then into the bloodstream affecting brain and its coverings. If severe and not treated promptly can also result in death of infected persons. Luckily, we have the pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13 and PPSV23) which can significantly protect against this deadly disease and reduce the severity of infection. This vaccine is usually given to all adults above 65 years of age and below 65 years with underlying medical conditions/ low immunity. Hence its imperative to consult your specialist regarding the requirement of this vaccine if elderly people or those with chronic medical conditions are present in the family.

Covid 19 vaccine: Following the Covid 19 pandemic all healthy adults were given covid 19 vaccine to protect from the severe disease caused by SARS Co V. There are 2 most common types of vaccine in India, Viral killed vaccine or Vector based vaccine both of which have a significant protection rate against severe disease forms of Covid19. If not vaccinated kindly consult your specialist and take the benefit of this vaccine.

All common colds and Flu require antibiotics: Most of the common colds and Flu are caused by respiratory viruses which do not respond to antibiotics which are given for bacterial infections. Irrational and Self medication with antibiotics during flu will not only be futile but can also cause severe reactions and complicate the viral infections. Antibiotics to be taken only after consulting a specialist who prescribes it for secondary bacterial infections or concomitant bacterial infections.

Common colds and Flu subside on their own and doesnt require medical attention: Although most respiratory viral infections subside within few days to few weeks, they can result in complications of underlying medical conditions and can be fatal sometimes. Hence its important to consult and take proper treatment at an early stage to avoid these scenarios.

Home remedy and steam inhalation for colds is sufficient: Most of the home remedies and excessive steam inhalation can be harmful during colds. Using hot water and warm chest compresses while minimal steam inhalation and saltwater gargling is recommended, avoid using excessive steam inhalation and use of kadas and other mixtures which may cause gastritis and cause problems especially when associated with stomach flu.

Vaccines for flu is only for sick: Flu shot is recommended for all healthy adults annually. Kindly consult your specialist for the same.

My immunity is good and hence I dont have to worry about flu: In fact, its noted that some viruses use the body immunity as a leap to attack the body and hence its imperative to consult and take proper treatment at an early stage.

Although Winter is the best season to enjoy festivities and vacation, caution to be exercised as this is also the flu season which can impact your life during this beautiful weather. Be aware of it and consult promptly if symptoms arise and dont wait for the disease to take over you this winter.

Are They Not Memes?: Devo on How De-evolution Is More Meaningful Than Ever, as Band Celebrates 50 Years With a New Compilation and Tour – Variety

October 25, 2023

Popular on Variety

Devo was, and is, the ultimate future-proof band. When they first entered the public consciousness in the late 70s, Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale and company seemed impossibly ahead of their time in a primitive-futurist kind of way and they still do. Theres very little that you could consider dated about the 50 cuts on their new career retrospective, 50 Years of De-Evolution 1973-2023, since their worldview always kind of seemed to be trained on offering up dystopianism with a smile and a jacked-up synth-rock beat. De-evolution, for better or worse, is timeless, and so, apparently, are the men who introduced it to the world.

Beyond the just-released Rhino collection, the band is engaged in a round of touring that will take them up and down the west coast through the first three weeks of November, including a show at L.A.s YouTube Theatre on Nov. 16 and a festival date in Orange County two days later. (Scroll down for the full list of dates.)

They admit they may not be timeless in every regard. Mothersbaugh tells Variety how it felt being on tour in Europe recently: I really enjoyed doing the European shows. It reminded me enough of the old days that it was fun. And I mean, we dont look the same. But when I was a kid I loved to go see Hound Dog Taylor and different old blues players. And youd look at their album covers and then youd see them in person and youd go, Whoa, thats pretty hardcore. Like, Oh, wait a minute, that was 15 years ago or 20 years ago, when the album came out. And so now you see kids in the audience give you looks like that. Theyre looking and theyre going, Wait a minute, whats this? He didnt have that on the Freedom of Choice cover. And you just give him a scowl and scare him a little bit.

We spoke with Mothersbaugh and Casale separately for this story, conjoining some of their quotes in a Q&A that has been edited for length and clarity. Among the subjects, beyond the new compilation and touring, we also hit on their early days as young alien types in Akron, working with Brian Eno, some brief encounters with Joni Mitchell and Mick Jagger now, at last, the story can be told about why Keith Richards wanted to physically harm Mothersbaugh and whether planet earth is doomed.

The tour listings on Ticketmaster say Devo: The Farewell Tour Celebrating 50 Years. But the word is, youre not really saying farewell, right?

Mark Mothersbaugh: God, its so irritating that somebody in our camp let the promoter write farewell tour so he could sell a few extra tickets. Thats irritating to me, but I think we probably wont be the first band that has more than one farewell tour. We can have a Hello! tour next, I guess, next year. Well do the Welcome Back Tour or something.

Gerald Casale: That was a promoter-run idea. They werent listening to us. We said, Listen, this is the 50th anniversary of de-evolution. So were saying farewell to the first 50 years of de-evolution because theres going to be a lot more. Because youve got to agree that de-evolutions real and exponentially ramping up in front of all of our faces. And they just wanted to run with farewell for ticket sales. I think clearly if Devo was going to do a farewell tour, we wouldnt call it that. I would call it the Beginning Was the End tour, with a snake eating its tail with a Devo hat on. And I would reconnoiter the show and add more video interstitial elements and almost tell a historical narrative.

Mothersbaugh: Are you coming to the show?

Yes, absolutely.

Mothersbaugh: Well, then, if you come, I want you to also put it in your mind to stay healthy and I want you to come to 2073. I want you to come to our 100th anniversary show. We may not be there in flesh. We might be like those little robot things that deliver food around West Hollywood. But if we have all our sentient thoughts in that one unit, who knows? We might find out its even easier than being flesh and blood. We might like it better. But just keep it in mind that you want to be at the 2073 show.

I may have to send my avatar to that one, to watch your avatars.

Mothersbaugh: Well make sure you get your computer.

With the new collection, did you get very involved with that or just kind of sign off on Rhinos efforts?

Casale: Oh, we actually were working in close collaboration with the people at Rhino. They wanted that, and of course we wanted the same. So I feel really good about how it came out, and I think we curated it pretty well. And I like the package. You know, maybe 20 years ago, WEA out of Japan assembled a complete collection of every release we ever made on Warner as a collection of CDs with the original artwork and everything, just scaled down, in a box. It was really beautifully done and well thought out and kind of a novelty, and thats the only other thing Ive ever seen that was really quality. I felt like we needed this.

Mothersbaugh: I helped with graphics and that area, mostly. And also, there are a lot of recordings down in my basement here, right underneath where Im sitting [at his headquarters/studio on Sunset Blvd.). So I had a lot to do with collecting all that stuff, and then I let people that are more passionate about what songs to choose do that, because for me, my favorite Devo songs change every day. I have to go look at it again, because I dont have it in front of me. But I always like it when something Booji Boy sings is on (a project), so I hope theres a Booji Boy song on it.

Do you feel like its pretty obvious what people want in a collection like this? Or were there any sort of eras or songs where you were thinking, Okay, heres a chance to give this a little bit of an airing again, things that were not hits.

Casale: The answer is yes to all of that. With Devo, hits and misses are really an irrelevant misnomer kind of thing. Its either sounding more in the zeitgeist or way out, far out on the fringe. We like it all because we were an experimental collaborative group, and we werent cynically trying to write hits. So if we put something on a record, we liked it. And some of those things were esoteric tastes that a lot of people didnt like and other things connected with a larger group, so we span that whole gamut.

A bit earlier than this new set, you had a limited-edition collection that just focused on your earlier, pre-commercial years, Art Devo.

Mothersbaugh: Those actually required more digging around the basement than the Rhino release. I like both releases, because they do have a different tilt to each one, and we tried not to overlap, though Im sure theres a couple things that do. But that one is a lot of stuff that nobodys ever heard. Matter of fact, I hadnt even heard a lot of the stuff till we dug the tapes up and started transferring them to digital and cleaning them up. I like both of them. They have different mandates that complement each other.

Youve said that when you were coming up in Akron in the mid-70s, there were basically two clubs in the area you could play without getting physically attacked, or something like that. Fair to say you felt alienated from the culture of your contemporaries at the time?

Casale: I guess we were alienated, but we felt more like aliens. We werent alienated like, you know, existential punks or something. We felt like we were looking at a world that seemed like another planet. Itd be like if you were an alien in a spaceship with a monitor and you were just watching life on earth and commenting on it. Thats how removed we felt.

Its always fascinating to look back at musicians in the 70s, when we were coming out of the counterculture years, who were resisting that as well as the old culture that the counterculture was supposed to be rebelling against. Artists like yourselves who didnt have a lot of regard for maintaining traditions of any sort, musically or in your attitudes.

Casale: Yeah. I mean, we still were using 12-tone scale and mostly 2/4 and 4/4 beats although we got into 7/4 and 11/7 and a couple other wacko things. I just think that when any counterculture congeals into orthodoxy and becomes the thing that it railed against, thats when something pops out on the other end, like a carbuncle. And thats what started happening, these things that didnt fit the mold and certainly werent part of what was driving FM radio and stadium rock, You heard Kraftwerk, or you heard Giorgio Moroder, or garage-band stuff out of New York, like what Suicide was doing. Then came of course the Sex Pistols and the Clash, and it was just a revelation, at least for me. I saw the Damned in 1977 at CBGBs. I saw Patti Smith and saw Television and it was like, OK, somethings really happening, and were not isolated. Other people are out there thinking what we were thinking in Akron, but we didnt know that they were doing that and t hey didnt know about us.

But for a Patti Smith or Television, costuming is not going to be a big part of it. Did you feel like there were antecedents for some of the theatrical or really conceptual stuff?

Casale: Sure we did. In college, I studied art history extensively and had a great professor who showed us all the stuff Id never seen before during the Bauhaus era. Dadaists were actually doing performance art before there was a word for performance art. And they would put on these theatrical performances that were confrontational, and they would wear outrageous costumes, designed to piss off the audience, actually, or be clowny, or whatever. And of course, the immediate antecedents were the Beatles and the early 60s London scene and, frankly, American R&B people trying to look good in cool suits and flashy clothes that made them appealing. But we took it more from the Dadaists: OK, were meta. Were gonna wear these three industrial suits that are foolish-looking by many peoples standards, but well be able to rip them off because theyre disposable, and well be able to use it as a theatrical device live. It was really effective, and we were multimedia on purpose from the beginning, and making short films was part of the mantra. It was confrontational and we would get threatened, attacked, beer bottles thrown at us, you know, people jump on stage, rip the microphones out of our hand, push us around all of it happened. And of course that excited us. We thought, wow, if these people that were looking at hate us that much, lets keep doing it.

Because we were so isolated in these basements and garages, we honed our act. So we showed up on the scene fully formed, and people were stunned, either positive or negative. But I think thats what sold David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop; they all got it. And we found ourselves in Germany with Connie Plank and Brian Eno and visits from David Bowie in these insane, intense, 12-14-hour days in a barn for three weeks in the winter.

Youve said Eno was great as a producer of your first album because he kind of let you do your thing. And then he added a lot of ideas that didnt really make it onto the finished mixes.

Casale: Yeah, it was funny because he had evolved. Not de-evolved he had moved on from that guy that we knew as playing atonal outrageous synth pieces over Roxy Music songs and with a feather boa and the hair. He became this Zen gentleman by the time we met him again, and he had moved on to the Music for Airports and his Oblique Strategies card set. I think what he was trying to do is take these brutalists from Akron that were thoroughly immersed in this industrial, aggressive, challenging sound, and he was trying to make it more beautiful. He was trying to install spirit and harmony into it. And of course we had lived with this stuff and wanted the world to hear the songs the way we heard them. He was getting frustrated; if hed play this beautiful line over the top of one of our songs, or a beautiful harmony, then slowly during the mixing session, Mark and I would be pulling the faders down. But he was fun to be with, because he was such a smart guy so thoughtful and articulate.

And somehow you became more palatable to the wider rock culture despite yourselves although there were deliberate shifts in sound.

Mothersbaugh: For Art Devo, I pulled out a lot of the stuff out of the pre-Warner Bros. days, back when Bob and Jim and Jerry and me were the band, because that to me was kind of Devo at our most high-art position. After that, we decided that it was going to require a subversion for us to enter the market. We thought people were just going to love us for what we were, and they didnt. So we thought, OK, plan B: Were going to sneak vitamins and minerals into their food without them knowing it. Were going to use Madison Avenue techniques. And we started making our things more succinct, more easy to understand, and it worked.

We always thought, Wait a minute. This should be bigger. How come nobodys paying attention to what were doing? But we knew it wasnt going to be easy. I remember a time when Joni Mitchell, who had the same manager as us, and I bumped into each other in the hallway at the managers office. And she goes, Are you Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo? I go, yeah. She goes, Hey, Im going to be in this movie. And Im carrying a ghetto blaster on my shoulder, and I want a song to play on the ghetto blaster. And Im thinking I want it to be that song on your new album, Swelling Itching Brain. Do you mind if I use that? I go, No, that sounds great! Why do you want that song? She goes, Because its the most irritating, obnoxious song Ive ever heard in my whole life. And I go, Please use it.

So Joni Mitchell has somehow deliberately listened to music she considers obnoxious and abrasive. What was the result of that?

Mothersbaugh: Well, I dont know what the part was. I dont even know what the movie was. It just made me laugh that thats what she had to say to me.

How did some of the other established rock giants relate to you?

Mothersbaugh: I remember back in like 81, the Rolling Stones were recording at the Power Station the same time Devo was. This old guy who looked like a grandpa came upstairs in a big knit wool sweater and he goes, Hey, would one of you guys play synthesizer on my record? And I look at him and Im like, Thats Charlie Watts. I went downstairs and he and Mick Jagger and Bob Clearmountain were sitting in this room and they had this song called Worried About My Baby or something. [Editors note: likely Worried About You.] It wasnt a bad song; it wasnt their best song. They said they wanted to put a synth on it, and to me, that seemed impossible first off, because I listened to the song and I was like, That aesthetic, a synth is gonna trash it; thats not gonna make it better. That was because I thought of synths as something aggressive and in-your-face They got really stoned, and we started playing around, and I brought out a vocoder that Bob Moog had loaned us the same one Wendy Carlos used for Clockwork Orange. It had a great sound and we used it for a couple songs on our record. I plugged a headphone into the mic input, and I had a synth sitting on their piano, and I ran the synth into one side of it, and then I had Mick Jagger take the headphone Ive never told anybody this, because for a while I was really embarrassed that I ever did it.

I got Mick Jagger to put a pair of headphones on sideways. He had this rhythm he wanted to move up. I said, well, how do you want the synth to sound? And hes going boom, bop, bop, doo, bop, doo, bop. And so I put a sound into the Prophet synthesizer and he was doing that into a vocoder. You would have had to have done the kind of synthesizer sounds that I hated to put a synth on that song something tasteful and small, in the back of this kind of romantic, soft, lazy song. On one hand, I was totally freaked out that I was in the same room with those guys. And on the other hand, I was totally freaked out because I thought, This song, the last thing it needs is a synthesizer. And so I put this thing on his face and we put this part out on their song, and I think you can hear a tiny bit of it in the song at the end of the album when it came out. But um, why am I telling you that story?

Keith Richards was friends with my brother, Bob. He later told Bob, What guy in your band put that part on my song? I want to stab him in the heart with a knife.

Certainly Devo entered the culture even in subliminal ways. The words devolve and de-evolution werent really a concept before you guys were around, and now you hear those words all the time. Like, every time there is a political debate.

Casale: Yeah, it quit being a polarizing term. It quit being something that pissed people off. Now its just like oh, yeah, de-evolution, right you know, its real. As a matter of fact, last year the Websters Dictionary, they pick words of the year. Last year it was Devolve. They showed hundreds and hundreds of references. mostly political articles, some social science articles and behavioral articles about sociobiology, but its everywhere. And youre correct when now you watch the news and it all seems like an episode of Black Mirror. I mean, you dont need the Onion anymore because its all the Onion, right? Its that devolved.

Mothersbaugh: I have to say, the word de-evolution first became a word in our vernacular in the 30s. It was Christians having a response to Darwinism, and they made jokes and ridiculed evolution. Not long after Jerry found the book In the Beginning Was the End: How Man Came into Being Through Cannibalism, in which they talk about de-evolution, I found a pamphlet later on from the 30s by a reverend from Ohio, called Jocko Homo: Heaven Bound King of the Apes. And you open it up and theres a picture of a staircase on the way to heaven, and every stair says like, World War I, World War II, murder, insanity, drug use and theres an ape sitting there chewing on a leg bone, knelt down in front of the staircase, and then standing up behind him, smiling, theres a devil holding a pitchfork, and across his chest it says, De-evolution. I think thats maybe the oldest use of that term, and so it did exist back in the 30s.

Casale: Things have been borne out a little bit, unfortunately, beyond my worst fears. Beyond my most dystopian nightmare. You can go back to Obama. The blowback on poor Obama and his years that happened is just phenomenal. Its like H-bomb time. Trump and his cohorts and the people in the House, these guys are serious. They are authoritarians, and they do not believe in democracy, and theyre willing to bring it down.

There is the saying about the arc of the universe bending toward justice, and right now, de-evolution seems more like it.

Casale: Its more like what George Orwell said about history is the boot coming down in the face of humanity over and over again.

And, yet, with Devo, that can sound a little fun while that medicines going down.

Casale: Thats it. We threw in a spoonful of sugar.

Mothersbaugh: We were hoping that people were going to avert the kind of stuff thats facing us right now, and they could have, but greed and stupidity allowed us to keep pushing it further and further to the brink, and now were going to see if we can back it up or not. And we may not. Maybe humans have destroyed the planet for all nature. Hopefully we havent. I think before I met Gerry. I read this book called Population Bomb, by a sociologist in the U.S., and everybody hated him and wrote hate letters to him for this book. But he said: Do the math. Humans have consistently doubled, tripled, quadrupled to the point where we will have depleted the oceans and have eaten everything that you can eat on this planet. And the only hope for planet earth is that the planet will retaliate against humans and kill us off with a virus and save Planet Earth. He said, the other possibility is nuclear war, and then thats bad for all of nature. And so, at 19, I pledged I would never have kids because of that. I said, Im not bringing more humans onto the planet. Thats the one thing I could do. Im not famous. Im not rich. Nobody cares about what I think, but I could be one of the people to volunteer not to bring another human on the planet.

Did that decision continue to feel good over time?

I stayed with that, until 20 years ago when I got married, and my wife goes, OK, I know you said youre not going to bring more humans onto the planet, but what if we adopted somebody that was already here? That wouldnt go against your tenets, would it? And I was like, Oh, you got me on that one. And so we ended up adopting, and I remember up until the very moment that we picked up our daughter in China, the closer we got to it, I thought, My wife is insane. Why in the hell are we doing this? Im an egotistical, self-centered artist. Hows that gonna be? Thats just gonna get in the way, and Im too old for kids. And then I saw the baby that Id seen pictures of for the last three months because shed been abandoned, and I remember looking and I said, Thats Margaret. Thats my baby. Im a dad. And it was the heaviest thing that ever happened to me in my whole life. This door opened and it was like I felt this primordial urge to be a father. And I just remember: I both thought my wife was the smartest human Id ever met in my whole life at that moment, and I also thought: Theres no hope for humans. Its going to take the virus killing us off to save planet Earth. Well never be able to do it ourselves. Because it was so intense, the feeling of being a dad. I totally got it. And I got two kids and thats the best thing that ever happened to me in my life.

So do you try not to be too pessimistic about the world, just for their benefit?

Mothersbaugh: Oh, you know what? Honestly, Im still not that pessimistic. Ive got a feeling that the people that are in control of governments around the world are insane, and that the people that want to be the president of this country, theyre the crazies, and its like, I could imagine that guy holding the steering wheel and jamming on the gas going, Hey, Im 85. I dont care and then going over the edge and taking everybody with him.

But I also imagine that theres enough people in this world that have kids and thatll help if you have kids, and have a connection to the future that are going to say, Were not going to let this guy do that. Were not going to let some oligarch somewhere, whatever country that oligarch is in, destroy everything for everybody. So Im still voting for that side of the card.

Moving back from the fate of humanity to this tour Mark, youve said that youre comfortable playing the classic material. And youve said that if you go see a band of a certain age, you dont necessarily want to hear fresh stuff. Is that how you feel, being out there and doing shows this year?

Mothersbaugh: Yeah, honestly, I dont want to hear OK, pick somebody. Name a band, so I dont have to pick a bands name.

Like, the Rolling Stones?

Mothersbaugh: [not hearing] Who?

The Stones?

Mothersbaugh: Oh, OK, I thought you said something else. You know, I thought I was invincible back in the 70s [with hearing issues], and I never used in-ear monitors or anything. And playing with orchestras is deceptively loud, I gotta tell ya. If youre sitting in Abbey Road and youve got a hundred-piece orchestra in the next room crashing away on Thor: Ragnarok or Lego or Cocaine Bear, even, theyre pretty goddamn loud! I thought I was invincible, but I wasnt.

But yeah, the Rolling Stones oh, God, I want to hear the old stuff. I want to hear the stuff that was on The TAMI Show and their very best stuff. I want to hear Last Time and Get Off My Cloud and definitely Satisfaction. Street Fighting Man and anything earlier than that is great as far as Im concerned, and then the other stuff You know, sometimes you just keep doing it anyhow, and I guess that stuff means something to somebody. And it might be that somebody that was 12 years old when they first heard Wild Horses, and they love it. But, to me, Wild Horses, thats when I said, Uh-oh, its over for them. Thats how I felt when I heard it. I thought, Yeah, I dont need to hear another new Rolling Stones song.

I remember you saying in the past, Gerry, that as some of the records got pretty synthesized at some point, maybe the fact that Devo rocked sometimes got undervalued. So when you do shows now, do the shows rock? Is that safe to say?

Casale: Yes, they do. People cant believe it, and thats what they love. They cant believe that these septuagenarians are actually playing and rocking out. We always did, but it got bypassed. But now its featured and people talk about it.

You guys tour fairly rarely. What does it take for you to get back in kind of a touring mindset and play those songs?

Mothersbaugh: I got out of touring just because, every night I was on stage, I used to throw myself around, and I would make enough noise that, by the end of the show I remember being 26 or 27 and going, This is really hard. I dont know if I can do this when Im 30. And now Im 73, and you know, Gerrys even older than me. But he was jumping around on stage on these shows and he looked great. Bob Mothersbaugh plays better than he ever did. We have a guy, Jeff Friedl, playing drums now. Hes excellent. And Josh (Hager) on guitar and keyboard, replacing Bob Casale, is really good. And Im hanging in there. You know, I had to modify some stuff Im not cannonballing into the audience anymore. But based on the reaction from the audiences, I think people like it and think it sounds pretty good. So Im enjoying that.

Its kind of fun to get out of this room you see behind me. I sit here every day for the last 30 years, writing music for like 150 different films and television series and video games. You know, my ass got too wide because of that.

Fifth COVID Vaccine Shot For Kids and Adults Now Widely Available – The Rhino Times of Greensboro – The Rhino TImes

October 19, 2022

If you dont feel like youve had enough COVID-19 vaccine shots already, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the State of North Carolina are recommending that you get another shot a fifth one for those whove all the four previously recommended shots.

The new booster is specifically designed to protect against the latest COVID-19 variants.

There have been some availability problems in the state in recent weeks for those whove wanted the shot, but now the new vaccine appears to be widely available largely because a lot of people are forgoing the advice to get immunized once again due to the public perception that the threat of the disease is no longer prevalent.

According to a Thursday, Oct. 13 press release from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), even children age 5 and up can now receive the updated COVID-19 booster.

The press release states that the latest booster is available in North Carolina due to the Food and Drug Administrations emergency use authorization along with the CDCs recommendation.

NCDHHS Secretary Kody Kinsley said this week that children should be vaccinated just as adults should.

Kids 5 and older can now get the most up-to-date protection from COVID-19 from an updated booster to help renew their bodys defenses against the latest variants of the virus this fall and winter, Kinsley stated. Children are vulnerable to COVID-19 and long-term complications just like everyone else. Staying up to date on vaccines and boosters is the best way to protect against severe illness, hospitalization and death from the virus.

The new booster is referred to as a bivalent vaccine which means that it targets both the original coronavirus strain and the newer Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants.

As of mid-September, these variants constituted about 80 percent of COVID-19 cases in North Carolina. According to state health officials, everyone 5 years of age and older should get the updated COVID-19 booster two months after they finish their primary series or any booster dose.

Health officials say that its safe to get the new COVID-19 vaccine at the same time you get your annual flu vaccine.

The new COVID-19 vaccines, like the previous ones, are free to everyone, regardless of insurance or immigration status.

For more information about COVID-19 vaccines, boosters, testing and treatment or to find locations to arrange a COVID-19 or flu vaccine shot you can visit MySpot.nc.gov or call the states COVID-19 Vaccine Help Center at 888-675-4567.

Rhinorrhea – Wikipedia

October 9, 2022

Type of medical symptom where the nasal cavity is filled with fluid mucus

Medical condition

Rhinorrhea, rhinorrhoea, or informally runny nose is the free discharge of a thin mucus fluid from the nose;[1] it is a common condition. It is a common symptom of allergies (hay fever) or certain viral infections, such as the common cold or COVID-19. It can be a side effect of crying, exposure to cold temperatures, cocaine abuse,[2] or drug withdrawal, such as from methadone or other opioids.[3] Treatment for rhinorrhea is not usually undertaken, but there are a number of medical treatments and preventive techniques.

The term was coined in 1866 from the Greek rhino- ("of the nose") and -rhoia ("discharge" or "flow").[4]

Rhinorrhea is characterized by an excess amount of mucus produced by the mucous membranes that line the nasal cavities. The membranes create mucus faster than it can be processed, causing a backup of mucus in the nasal cavities. As the cavity fills up, it blocks off the air passageway, causing difficulty breathing through the nose. Air caught in nasal cavities, namely the sinus cavities, cannot be released and the resulting pressure may cause a headache or facial pain. If the sinus passage remains blocked, there is a chance that sinusitis may result.[5] If the mucus backs up through the Eustachian tube, it may result in ear pain or an ear infection. Excess mucus accumulating in the throat or back of the nose may cause a post-nasal drip, resulting in a sore throat or coughing.[5] Additional symptoms include sneezing, nosebleeds, and nasal discharge.[6]

The Mayo Clinic says that a runny nose can be caused by anything that irritates or inflames the nasal tissues, including infections such as the common cold and influenza, and allergies and various irritants. Some people have a chronically runny nose for no apparent reason (non-allergic rhinitis or vasomotor rhinitis). Less common causes include polyps, a foreign body, a tumor or migraine-like headaches. Causes listed (alphabetically) and discussed are: acute sinusitis (nasal and sinus infection), allergies, chronic sinusitis, Churg-Strauss syndrome, common cold, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), decongestant nasal spray overuse, deviated septum, dry air, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's granulomatosis), hormonal changes, influenza (flu), lodged object, medicines (such as those used to treat high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, depression, seizures and other conditions), nasal polyps, non-allergic rhinitis (chronic congestion or sneezing not related to allergies), occupational asthma, pregnancy, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), spinal fluid leak, and tobacco smoke.[7]

Rhinorrhea is especially common in cold weather. Cold-induced rhinorrhea occurs due to a combination of thermodynamics and the body's natural reactions to cold weather stimuli. One of the purposes of nasal mucus is to warm inhaled air to body temperature as it enters the body; this requires the nasal cavities to be constantly coated with liquid mucus. In cold weather the mucus lining nasal passages tends to dry out, do that mucous membranes must work harder, producing more mucus to keep the cavity lined. As a result, the nasal cavity can fill up with mucus. At the same time, when air is exhaled, water vapor in breath condenses as the warm air meets the colder outside temperature near the nostrils. This causes excess water to build up inside nasal cavities, spilling out through the nostrils.[8]

Rhinorrhea can be a symptom of other diseases, such as the common cold or influenza. During these infections, the nasal mucous membranes produce excess mucus, filling the nasal cavities. This is to prevent infection from spreading to the lungs and respiratory tract, where it could cause far worse damage.[9] It has also been suggested that rhinorrhea is a result of viral evolution whereby virus variants that increase nasal secretion are selected for.[10] Rhinorrhea caused by these infections usually occur on circadian rhythms.[11] Over the course of a viral infection, sinusitis (the inflammation of the nasal tissue) may occur, causing the mucous membranes to release more mucus. Acute sinusitis consists of the nasal passages swelling during a viral infection. Chronic sinusitis occurs when one or more nasal polyps appear.[citation needed] This can be caused by a deviated septum as well as a viral infection.[12]

Rhinorrhea can also occur when individuals with allergies to certain substances, such as pollen, dust, latex, soy, shellfish, or animal dander, are exposed to these allergens. In people with sensitized immune systems, the inhalation of one of these substances triggers the production of the antibody immunoglobulin E (IgE), which binds to mast cells and basophils. IgE bound to mast cells are stimulated by pollen and dust, causing the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine.[13] In turn, this causes, among other things, inflammation and swelling of the tissue of the nasal cavities as well as increased mucus production. Particulate matter in polluted air and chemicals such as chlorine and detergents, which can normally be tolerated, can make the condition considerably worse.[citation needed]

Rhinorrhea is also associated with shedding tears (lacrimation), whether from emotional events or from eye irritation. When excess tears are produced, the liquid drains through the inner corner of the eyelids, through the nasolacrimal duct, and into the nasal cavities. As more tears are shed, more liquid flows into the nasal cavities, both stimulating mucus production and hydrating any dry mucus already present in the nasal cavity. The buildup of fluid is usually resolved via mucus expulsion through the nostrils.[9]

Rhinorrhea can be caused by a head injury, a serious condition. A basilar skull fracture can result in a rupture of the barrier between the sinonasal cavity and the anterior cranial fossae or the middle cranial fossae. This can cause the nasal cavity to fill with cerebrospinal fluid (cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea, CSF rhinorrhea), a condition that can lead to a number of serious complications, including death if not addressed properly.[14]

Rhinorrhea can occur as a symptom of opioid withdrawal accompanied by lacrimation.[15] When it occurs due to exercise, it is described as exercise-induced rhinitis.[16][17][18] Other causes include cystic fibrosis, whooping cough, nasal tumors, hormonal changes, and cluster headaches. Due to changes in clinical practice, rhinorrhea is now reported as a frequent side effect of oxygen-intubation during colonoscopy procedures.[19] Rhinorrhea can also be the side effect of several genetic disorders, such as primary ciliary dyskinesia.[12]

In most cases, treatment for rhinorrhea is not necessary since it will clear up on its ownespecially if it is the symptom of an infection. For general cases nose-blowing can get rid of the mucus buildup. Though blowing may be a quick-fix solution, it would likely proliferate mucosal production in the sinuses, leading to frequent and higher mucus buildups in the nose. Alternatively, saline nasal sprays and vasoconstrictor nasal sprays may also be used, but may become counterproductive after several days of use, causing rhinitis medicamentosa.[citation needed]

In recurring cases, such as those due to allergies, there are medicinal treatments available. For cases caused by histamine buildup, several types of antihistamines can be obtained relatively cheaply from drugstores.[citation needed]

Krrish (franchise) – Wikipedia

October 9, 2022

Film franchise

Krrish is an Indian franchise of superhero films, television series, comics and video games. The film series is directed, produced and written by Rakesh Roshan. Krrish is considered Indian cinema's first such film series.[1] All three films starred Rakesh's son Hrithik Roshan in the titular role. The films are centred, initially, on a mentally disabled boy who has an encounter with an extraterrestrial being, and later, his son, who grows up to be a reluctant superhero.

In 2013, an animated television series based on this Krrish film series, and named Kid Krrish, aired on Cartoon Network India. It also spawned a spin-off animation-cum-live-action series titled J Bole Toh Jadoo that aired on Nickelodeon (India).[2] Krrish 3 was the first Indian film to launch its own official Facebook Emoticons as part of the promotion.[3] Krrish is the tenth highest-grossing film series in India.[4]

The film series covers the story of three generations of the Mehra family. It first begins with Dr. Sanjay Mehra (Rakesh Roshan) and his wife Sonia (Rekha) who are part of a car crash. Dr. Mehra has died while Sonia, who is pregnant, survives with injuries. This results in their son, Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan), being born developmentally disabled. After receiving supernatural abilities from an alien he befriends, Rohit marries his best friend Nisha (Preity Zinta) by the end of the first film. Their son, Krishna Mehra (also Hrithik Roshan) is born with the same supernatural powers in the second film (Krrish) which he uses to help people, eventually turning into the superhero 'Krrish'. He is later romantically involved with city girl Priya (Priyanka Chopra). By the end of the second film, the characters Sonia, Rohit, Krishna, and Priya are the only members of the family that are still alive while Nisha died after a few days of Krishna's birth. The third film shows the entry of Kaal (Vivek Oberoi) who was created by Dr. Arya (Naseeruddin Shah) during an experiment on Rohit thus being Rohit's second son and the main antagonist of the film. Kaal apparently kills Krrish but he is saved by Rohit who dies while giving life to dead Krrish through his solar experiment. Krishna finally kills Kaal and by the end of the third film, Krishna, Priya and their son, Rohit (named after his grandfather Rohit Mehra) are alive while Sonia died somewhere between the events of Krrish and Krrish 3.

Scientist Sanjay Mehra (Rakesh Roshan) creates a computer program from which he calls for extraterrestrial life. When he believes he has finally gotten a response, the scientific community mocks him. While driving home, an alien spacecraft appears overhead. Sanjay veers off the road and dies, but his pregnant wife Sonia (Rekha) survives and gives birth to their son Rohit (Hrithik Roshan), who is developmentally disabled as a result of the crash.

An older Rohit befriends a young woman named Nisha (Preity Zinta) and they find Sanjay's computer and summon the aliens by accident. The visiting aliens leave in haste, leaving one behind by accident. Rohit, Nisha and Rohit's friends find and befriend the alien, naming him Jadoo ("Magic") and discover his psychokinesis abilities. Jadoo discovers that Rohit is mentally abnormal and uses his powers to enhance the boy's mind. Rohit finds himself accepted by most of his peers. A bully, Raj, and his friends attempt to embarrass Rohit multiple times, only to be beaten in fights as well as in sport since Rohit's physical strength and agility are increased along with his mental abilities to the peak of human potential.

Eventually, the government gets suspicious of Rohit and suspects him of hiding Jadoo. A group of policemen manages to knock Rohit out and capture Jadoo, preparing to take him to America for testing. However, Rohit wakes up and summons the aliens to return for Jadoo. Using his enhanced abilities, Rohit arrives in time to rescue Jadoo and manages to send him in his species spaceship. As he leaves, Jadoo takes Rohit's powers and Rohit is mentally disabled again. However, this saves him from prosecution by the government and after everything dies down, Jadoo silently returns Rohit's new abilities permanently. Rohit and Nisha lead a happy life together from then on.

Five-year-old orphan Krishna Mehra is undergoing an intelligence quotient test by his professors, who suspect he has high IQ and physical abilities. His grandmother Sonia (Rekha) takes the young Krishna to a remote mountain village in northern India to conceal his unique abilities. Years later, Krishna (Hrithik Roshan) meets Priya (Priyanka Chopra) when she vacations in the country. Krishna and Priya grow close just before she departs for her home in Singapore.

To appease her boss, Priya calls Krishna to join her in Singapore, where she tries to get him to perform heroic acts. Krishna does not, as he had promised his grandmother that he would hide his abilities. Krishna learns that his father Rohit was hired to help design a machine to see the future by Dr. Siddhant Arya (Naseeruddin Shah). He further learned that Rohit had been killed by Dr. Siddhant when he tried to destroy the machine, after learning of Siddhant's evil intentions. This caused his mother, Nisha (Preity Zinta), to die of a broken heart.

Krishna later goes to a circus where an explosion occurs. He puts on a mask to hide his identity in order to save some trapped children, after which he is given the identity of superhero Krrish. Vikram Sinha (Sharat Saxena), who has been searching for Krishna for years, informs Krishna that his father Rohit is alive and Dr. Siddhant has been holding him captive. Krishna follows Siddhant to his island lair, where a huge fight ensues between Krrish and the doctor's thugs. Krrish eventually defeats them and saves Priya and Rohit. In the final scene, Krrish mortally wounds Siddhant. Before he dies, Siddhant asks Krrish who he is, and Krishna reveals himself. After revealing to Rohit that he is his son, Krishna takes Priya and Rohit back to India, reuniting him with Sonia. Rohit finds out his wife, Nisha, died after he disappeared. He mourns her, together with his son and mother, but still thanks Jadoo (who is somewhere between the stars) for giving his family this gift.

Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan), who is a professional scientist now, is living a happy life in Mumbai along with his son Krishna (Hrithik Roshan) who is now married to Priya (Priyanka Chopra). While working in the laboratory, Rohit invents a device to bring back the life of dead tissue using solar energy through reflections but failed to complete it because of the high intensity of sun rays. Priya works as a journalist for Aaj Tak whereas Krishna is struggling hard to keep a steady job while helping the city with his superpowers as the superhero 'Krrish'.

Somewhere in an isolated area, the owner of Kaal laboratories, Kaal (Vivek Oberoi), who has extraordinary telepathic powers, is completely handicapped with his body except his brain and two fingers. He has been creating powerful human-animal mutants (or Maanvars he calls them) using his DNA, particularly the ruthless chameleon mutant Kaya (Kangana Ranaut) who can assume any form she wants. Kaal has been trying hard to cure himself but has been unsuccessful thus far. He dreams of making billions by first creating dangerous viruses using his DNA, spreading them in densely populated areas and then selling his own antidotes.

Kaal chooses India as his next target and with Kaya and other mutants' help, he spreads his newly created virus in Mumbai which creates havoc among the city. Rohit, Krishna, and Priya remain unaffected by the virus. Rohit manages to create an antidote using Krishna's blood and Krishna spreads it throughout the city via explosions for quick effect. For this, Kaal's mutants attack and thrash Rohit's laboratory but Rohit and Priya are saved by Krrish. Priya is injured and hospitalized while one of the mutants is also injured which is kept in scientific custody by Rohit and his team. To find out how an antidote was developed without using his own blood, Kaal kidnaps Priya who is pregnant with Krishna's child and Kaya takes Priya's form. Rohit and Krishna are informed that Priya has lost her child. Afterward, Kaya starts living as Priya with Krishna and seeks for the antidote formula. Rohit departs to Singapore to explore some answers after he finds out that the virus has a link with his own DNA and Kaal laboratories as well. Meanwhile, Kaya develops an attraction towards Krishna but he soon discovers her true identity and reveals himself as Krrish to her. Kaya decides to help Krishna and discloses that Priya and her child are still safe in Kaal's hideout.

In Singapore, Rohit is kidnapped by Kaal's men. Rohit unveils to Kaal that he was kidnapped by Dr. Siddhant Arya (Naseeruddin Shah) who tried to create a synonymous avatar of the former but got only a disabled child and donated him into an orphanage where the boy was adopted by a wealthy family, who eventually grows up to become Kaal. Kaal cures himself by using Rohit's body serum. Krishna saves Priya after killing the mutants and finally reaches the correct hideout with Kaya's help where Kaal kills both of them. Kaal then surrounds himself completely into a steel body due to his powerful magnetic powers and departs to Mumbai in search of Priya meanwhile causing destruction to the city.

Angered by Krishna's death, Rohit decides to bring Krrish back to life by using the device invented by him but sacrifices himself to absorb the high intensity of sunlight. Krrish, now thrice as powerful as before, comes after him and saves Priya. Krrish, unable to crush Kaal after brutally fighting with him, concludes that the latter could be demolished by melting his steel body. He quickly adjusts the mirrors for reflection and points Rohit's device towards Kaal whose steel body melts finally. The film ends with Priya delivering a baby which also shows signs of extraordinary power.

Rakesh Roshan has revealed that he will soon start working for Krrish 4 as he feels that the public wants it. "I will start working on the sequel soon. Due to public demand, we may include some sidekick characters as well," said Rakesh Roshan while celebrating the success of Krrish 3, "I'm currently not working on a film outside the Krrish franchise with Hrithik Roshan, but I will do a film in the future. I would love to direct him in a fresh script as soon as I'm relieved with this franchise," Rakesh Roshan explained. He was accompanied by Hrithik Roshan at this event in Tamil Nadu on Monday, 12 November. Hrithik Roshan spoke about how he felt playing a superhero. "Being a superhero is like playing any one of us because we all have it inside us. It has been a great journey for me and I learned a lot by playing the character."[5]

In September 2016, Rakesh Roshan announced the fourth installment of the franchise. Rakesh Roshan said, When my wife showed me a tweet with Bappas (Lord Ganesha) picture as Krrish, it reaffirmed my belief that Krrish is the original superhero we have. It boosted my confidence and inspired me to make the fourth installment. The movie will be released during Christmas 2020.[6] Hrithik also tweeted about the film, sharing a photograph of Lord Ganesha dressed as Krrish.[7]

In September 2017, it was reported that Hrithik Roshan would portray both the protagonist and the antagonist by playing a dual role.[8][9] Priyanka Chopra will also reprise her character of Priya Mehra in the film, as confirmed by Rakesh Roshan.[10]

On the completion of 15 years of Krrish, Hrithik Roshan teased Krrish 4 via his social media handles on June 23, 2021.[11]

In 2004, owing to the popularity of Koi... The show focuses on Jadoo as a central character and his interplanetary adventures when he enters the lives of two kids on Earth, Nina and Chakki. Also on the show are Jadoo's friends Tona, Half-Time and Ki2 from his home planet Tarkopar.[13] The show sketches Tarkopar as a colorful fantasy-land with rhythmic, organic and spiral structures and landscapes.[14]

Cartoon Network launched Kid Krrish which is an Indian animated movies series created by Filmkraft Productions which partnered with Trivandrum based Toonz Animation India and Cartoon Network Asia. It is targeted at ages 812. The first of the 4 movies Kid Krrish aired on 2 October 2013 on Cartoon Network India channel. The run-time is about an hour and it aired in 4 languages - English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.[citation needed]

Cartoon Network India aired the second movie in the Kid Krrish franchise, Kid Krrish: Mission Bhutan on 19 July 2014.[15] The third movie, Kid Krrish: Mystery in Mongolia, was aired on 7 September 2014.[16] And the fourth movie Kid Krrish: Shakalaka Africa was telecast on 25 April 2015.

This was released as a comic book magazine available in stores in 2013 and also converted into an animated mobile comic to be released as weekly chapters through an exclusive Krrish Comics App, which will be launched by Hungama Digital, Filmkraft Productions (I) Pvt. Ltd digital partner for Krrish 3. Carving Dreams was responsible for securing the deal between Filmkraft Productions (I) Pvt. Ltd, Graphic India and Hungama Digital.[17]

Prolonged Hospitalization in a Pediatric Patient With Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C) and Human Rhino-Enterovirus Infection: A Case Report -…

September 23, 2022

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a serious sequelaof acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is unclear whether the co-occurrence of other viral respiratory illnesses, such as the human rhino-enterovirus (HRV/ENT), prolongs hospitalization or affects the clinical phenotype of patients with MIS-C. We report the hospital course of a three-year-old with MIS-C and HRV/ENT infection, who tested positive for HRV/ENT infection a few days prior to re-presenting for six days of fever, one day of emesis, bilateral conjunctivitis, and shortness of breath, all consistent with MIS-C. Due to worsening hypotension, he was admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) at a tertiary center, where he received vasoactive support, intravenous immunoglobulin, and high-dose intravenous steroids. Because of his worsening respiratory status, he was also started on anakinra with resultant gradual improvement. He was hospitalized for a total of 15 days. Concurrence of other viral infections may prolong hospitalization for patients with MIS-C.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a post-infectious inflammatory syndrome with a spectrum of presentations, including fever, mucocutaneous, gastrointestinal, cardiorespiratory, and/or neurological symptoms [1]. MIS-Ctypically occurstwo to four weeksfollowing an acute SARSCoV2 infection. As ofMay 2022, over 4,000cases ofMIS-Chadbeen reported in the United States [1]. Several studies investigating the clinical outcomes of pediatric patients with MIS-C in the United States suggest that the mean or median duration of hospitalization for MIS-C is seven days [2-4]. Our patient, who presented with severe multisystem disease including neurologic involvement, was admitted for a total of 15 days. It is possible that his hospital course and refractory respiratory features were compounded by his HRV/ENT infection. Furthermore, the impact of viral co-infection on MIS-C clinical phenotype is yet to be fully elucidated.

We report the case of athree-year-oldmale who presented to an outside emergency room (ER) with six days of fever and one day of bilateral conjunctivitis, emesis, and shortness of breath. He was initially evaluated in the same ER for fever three days prior. At that time, he had tested positive forrhino-enterovirus (HRV/ENT), but negative for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARSCoV2) by nasopharyngeal PCR. Upon re-presenting to the ER, he was febrile to 39Cand tachypneic to 60 breaths/min. His oxygen saturation was 98% on room air. He had bilateral conjunctival injection. His laboratorydatashowed hyponatremia with sodium of 126 mmol/L (range 135-148). C-reactive protein was elevated at greater than 190 mg/L (range 0.00-3.00). His SARSCoV2 nasopharyngeal PCR was positive. His chest radiograph showed hazy peri-hilar densities andperi-bronchialcuffing (Figure 1).He had a brief, self-resolved seizure with unilateral eyedeviation and refractory hypotension prompting transfer to a tertiary pediatric intensivecare unit (ICU).

In thepediatric ICU, he was startedon 2 liters ofoxygen via nasal cannula, intravenous fluids, vasopressors, and empiric antibiotics. Additional workup revealedanemia with thrombocytopenia, slightly improved hyponatremia since admission, elevated ferritin, triglyceride, troponin, d-dimer, and urine protein to creatinine ratio (Table 1). His SARSCoV2 immunoglobulin A and G antibodies were positive. His chest radiograph showed diffuse pulmonary opacities with trace bilateral pleural effusions (Figure 2). His ECHO showed normal biventricular functional and coronary arteries. He received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) at 2 g/kg on admission, and was placed on high-dose intravenous (IV) methylprednisolone, aspirin, andenoxaparin. He defervesced after IVIG infusion with some improvement of his inflammatory markers and wasweaned off vasopressors and supplemental oxygen by day 4 of hospitalization. However, he shortly developed increased work of breathing, tachypnea, and desaturations requiring re-initiation of supplemental oxygen. His chest X-ray showed worsening right-sided pleural effusion, and his ECHO showed a small pericardial effusion but normal function and coronaries. He was started on anakinra on day 5 of hospitalization and completed a six-day course. His inflammatory markers continued to improve, and he was weaned to room air on day 10. He was discharged on day 15 ofhospitalization on aspirin and an oral prednisolonetaper. He is followed longitudinally by pediatriccardiology and rheumatology.

Our patient presented with severe MIS-C, evidenced by his clinical features and laboratory findings. He also had a concurrent HRV/ENT infection. Thereportedrate of other respiratory viral coinfectioninpediatric patientswith SARSCoV2 hasvaried from 3-12% [5]. While bacterial co-infection is generally accepted to lead to a worse prognosis in acute SARSCoV2 infection, the impact of viral coinfections in MIS-C remains understudied [5]. A recent study showed that respiratory viral coinfections may contribute to the increased oxygen requirement in MIS-C [6]. However, respiratory syncytial virus infection (RSV) was most common in that population [6]. Prior to the SARSCoV2 pandemic, rhino/enterovirus was responsible for one-half to two-thirds of common colds. HRV/ENT has also been associated with a more severe hospitalization course than RSV and influenza A/B infections [7]. While there are studies looking at the epidemiology of respiratory viral coinfections in children, and case reports of co-infection with COVID-19 and mycoplasma or human metapneumoviruses in children [8], there is limited data on whether HRV/ENT in MIS-C specifically leads to adverse outcomes, including prolonged hospitalization.

Treatment of hospitalized patients with MIS-C often involves IVIG and steroids. There is some evidence that initiation of combination therapy with IVIG and steroids, compared to IVIG alone, is associated with a lower rate of treatment failure, escalation to biologic therapy, and decreased length of stay [9]. Anakinra (an IL-1 receptor antagonist), has been used for off-label treatment of severe MIS-C based on clinical expertise.Currently, there are limited pediatric studies on the impact of subcutaneous or intravenous anakinra on the duration of hospitalization in MIS-C. Our case highlights that concurrent HRV/ENT respiratory virus may lead to a more severe clinical outcome, requiring combination therapy such as IVIG, steroids, and/or anakinra, thereby prolonging the length of hospitalization.

MIS-C is an inflammatory complication of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, and is often associated with serious end-organ involvement, warranting ICU-level of care. While MIS-C is a post-viral sequela, its co-occurrence with HRV/ENT respiratory virus may prolong hospital stay, as evidenced by our patient who required 15 days of hospitalization, which is more than twice the average of seven days reported by previous surveillance studies. Our case demonstrates the need for additional studies to better understand outcomes for patients with MIS-C and concurrent HRV/ENT infection, as well as to establish optimal treatment protocols.
