COVID-19 Vaccines Are Still in Short Supply in Oregon. That May Change Over the Next Six Weeks. – Willamette Week

March 18, 2021

Despite early stumbles in the logistics of COVID-19 vaccine distribution, Oregon health officials say the state is ready, willing and able to double the rate of shots going into Oregonians' arms.

Currently, about 24,000 vaccinations a day are being given in Oregon. The Oregon Health Authority says it would increase that pace by distributing doses to local public health authorities, hospitals and pharmacies in March and April.

That plan matters because Oregon expects to start receiving vaccine doses at a far greater rate than it has so far this year. Whether the state can rapidly deliver that supply into armswithout the spectacular snafus that plagued Oregon's distribution to seniorswill determine when most adults get shots and when some semblance of normal life resumes.

AsWWfirst reported last week, the Oregon Health Authority projects it could have doses for 70% of the adult population by April 21, if vaccine manufacturers keep to their promised schedule.

That matches the timeline of President Joe Biden, who has called on states to make everyone eligible for a vaccine by May 1.

As of press deadlines,Oregon Gov. Kate Brown had declined to do so, instead taking a wait-and-see approach. Nor has she moved up the dates of eligibility for people younger than 65, including those with specific health conditions, farmworkers and manufacturing workers, who all become eligible March 29.

State health officials say that isn't because of any jitters over its ability to distribute a huge glut of shots. Instead, OHA says it is prepared to distribute whatever the feds provide.

"We are still on track to meet the projected April goal of receiving enough prime doses of the vaccines to vaccinate 70% of adults," says OHA spokesman Jonathan Modie. "We've been clear we want to advance our timelines, and we can move them up, if we receive enough doses from the federal government."

The date the Oregon Health Authority expects prime doses of COVID-19 vaccine to arrive in Oregon.

Oregon's plan to double the doses currently being distributed would give the following places this many doses each week.

Pfizer expects higher COVID-19 vaccine prices and yearly boosters, CFO says. And that means big sales long-term – FiercePharma

March 18, 2021

Pfizer made headlines last month when its chief financial officer said the company would look to raise COVID-19 vaccine prices after the pandemic wanes. The company is doubling down on that stance, and it now believes annual vaccinations are "increasingly likely."

Add those two things together, and you get a hefty long-term revenue stream.

During a recent virtual investor conference (PDF) hosted by Barclays, Pfizer Chief Financial Officer Frank DAmelio said the company sees significant opportunity for its COVID-19 vaccine once the market shifts from a pandemic situation to an endemic situation.

Right now, the market is clearly not being driven by what I'll call normal market conditions, D'Amelio explained to Barclays analyst Carter Gould during the virtual event. Instead, its been driven by kind of the pandemic state that we've been in and the needs of governments to really secure doses from the various vaccine suppliers.

Eventually, Pfizer expects normal market forces will start to kick in, DAmelio said.

At that point factors like efficacy, booster ability, clinical utility will basically become very important, and we view that as, quite frankly, a significant opportunity for our vaccine from a demand perspective, from a pricing perspective, given the clinical profile of our vaccine, DAmelio told the analyst.

Plus, Pfizer believes there will be demand for shots even after the current crisis. Citing variant concerns, Pfizer believes its "increasingly likely that an annual revaccination is going to take place and that those revaccinations will be needed for the foreseeable future, the CFO said.

Pfizer has said it expects $15 billion in revenue from the mRNA vaccine this year, and that number could grow as the company negotiates new supply deals. At the Barclays event, DAmelio said his company expects return after taxes of around 25% on the $15 billion figure, or around $3.75 billion. The CFO previously said he expects margins for the vaccine to grow over time.

On the manufacturing front, Pfizer and BioNTech have made several upgrades to their supply chains and now plan to produce 2 billion doses this year. The company is working to improve upon that number as well, DAmelio said.

In the wake of AstraZenecas recent supply shortfalls in Europe, Pfizer and BioNTech expect to deliver 200 million doses there in the second quarter. Pfizer also expects to ship 300 million doses to the U.S. during the first half of the year.

Aside from its COVID-19 vaccine work, Pfizer sees an opportunity to improve on current flu vaccines with mRNA technology as well as to grow the market with a higher efficacy product, DAmelio said at the event.

Mass COVID-19 vaccination site in Batavia to open Friday – Daily Herald

March 18, 2021

Kane County's first COVID-19 mass vaccination hub will open Friday in Batavia, and officials believe its proximity to Aurora and Elgin will help address racial and ethnic disparities for vaccinations among Black and Hispanic residents compared to their white neighbors.

Meanwhile, the quantity of vaccines coming into the county has shown a marked increase in recent weeks. On March 5, the county hit 100,000 doses issued. Two weeks later, the county was set to hit 150,000 doses on Wednesday, officials said.

Many of those shots have occurred at various pop-up clinics and health department events targeting first responders, teachers and senior citizens. Local hospitals, doctors' offices and pharmacies, which are also now receiving some of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, have also helped increase the pace of vaccines getting out to the local community.

The new Batavia mass vaccination site, at 501 N. Randall Road, will be open six days a week and is expected to serve 18,000 people per week and ramp up from there. It is a vacant retail building that most recently housed a Sam's Club.

"We are still seeing a situation where we have much more demand than supply, but that's getting better," said Michael Isaacson, deputy director of the county health department.

Isaacson said the county is earmarking 30% of the doses it receives for senior citizens, Black and Hispanic residents. However, the Batavia site will not reserve appointment slots specifically for those underserved groups. It will take appointments regardless of racial and ethnic demographics.

The shots specially reserved for minority groups will go out through special events at workplaces that employ large groups of minorities or places that attract minorities, such as an event hosted at a Mexican grocery store and a clinic organized with the African-American Health Coalition in Aurora, officials said.

The latest numbers show limited progress in addressing the racial and ethnic disparities in the last month. State numbers show 11.7% of the doses distributed to Kane County residents have gone to Hispanic residents. That's up from about 10% a month ago. And 2.98% of the doses have gone to Black residents, up from 2.7% a month ago.

"We're starting to move in the right direction, but there's still a lot of outreach that needs to continue to occur," Isaacson said. "We are continuing our work with other community partners to make sure we are encouraging all of our residents to get vaccinated. This is going to be something that each week I fully expect to see improvement."

Minority residents in the north end of the county continue to call for better access to the vaccines. Their frustration increased after plans to open a second mass vaccination clinic in Carpentersville collapsed when the Illinois Public Health Department and the Illinois National Guard determined the single site in Batavia would be sufficient.

For many residents on the north end of the county, the commute to Batavia can be 40 minutes or longer, and that's only if they have personal transportation.

Isaacson said the county health department is negotiating with local school districts for access to their buses, as well as Pace, to make sure those who need to use public transportation to reach Batavia can do so for free.

Details about how to access those buses should be finalized in the next couple of days.

Delaware residents getting one or both doses of Covid-19 vaccine nears 23% mark – delawarebusinessnow.com

March 18, 2021

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The percentage of Delaware residents either fully and partially vaccinated for Covid-19 is nearing 23 percent.

The Delaware Division of Public Healths vaccination tracker reported that 125,000 Delawareans had been fully vaccinated, with nearly 96,000 awaiting their second dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine.

The number of vaccinations is believed to higher than the reported number due to a lag in reporting shots by pharmacies and health care systems.

It was reported at the Tuesday Covid-19 briefing that about two-thirds of residents over 65 had received the vaccine. All of the individuals on the 65-plus state waiting list have received an invitation to a vaccination event.

For the latest figures from the tracker, click here.

Less than one percent of residents have received the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to limited supplies. Shipments of the J&J vaccine are expected to increase in April.

On Tuesday, it was announced that residents over the age of 50 can now sign up for vaccines through pharmacies. A state reservation site is expected to add the over 50 categories next week.

Physicians can now refer patients with underlying conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, to a vaccine provider if their practice does not offer shots.

As of Wednesday, the state vaccination dashboard showed reported 94,000 doses are available.

According to the NPR tracker, Delaware ranks in the middle of the pack among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in the population vaccination percentage.

Ranking at the top is New Mexico, which has now fully vaccinated nearly 30 percent of its population. Georgia ranks at the bottom at 18 percent. Delaware is listed at the national average 21.7 percent.

Delaware has slowed down mass vaccination events as it deals with priorities that include educators, the fragile elderly, minority communities, and those in line for a second dose.

Apple Maps updated with COVID-19 vaccination locations in the US – TechCrunch

March 18, 2021

Google earlier this year announced an update to Google Maps to help people find COVID-19 vaccination sites nearby, and now Apple is doing the same. Apple device owners can either ask Siri or search within Apple Maps to find nearby COVID-19 vaccine providers within the U.S., the company says. These results will include key information, like operating hours, addresses, phone numbers and links to the providers website.

To access this information through a voice command, users can ask Siri something like where can I get a COVID vaccination?, which will direct them to Maps.

In addition to Siri or searching directly within Apple Maps for vaccine info, the option COVID-19 vaccinations will also be available in Apple Maps Find Nearby menu.

Apple says its vaccination location data is being sourced from VaccineFinder, an initiative led by Boston Childrens Hospital. This data has also been helping to power Google Maps vaccine-finding capabilities, Google earlier said. Apple notes that healthcare providers, labs and other businesses can also choose to submit their information about either COVID-19 testing or vaccination locations via the Apple Business Register page. After doing so, Apple will validate the information and then display it to users who are searching for COVID-19 resources in their local area.

At launch, theres information about more than 20,000 vaccine locations being provided through Apple Maps. Apple says more sites will be added in the weeks to come.

Throughout the pandemic, Apple has integrated other COVID-related health resources into Apple Maps both in the U.S. and internationally. Last year, for example, it updated Apple Maps to display COVID-19 testing sites in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and the U.S. It also added COVID-19 modules to business pages, and updated Siri with more knowledge about COVID-19, testing sites and, now, vaccination locations.
