Unusual COVID-19 Symptoms You Might Miss – Verywell Health

Key Takeaways

Joseph Master, 42, a marketing and communications specialist based in New Jersey, recently tested positive for COVID-19 for the third time after traveling for work. His symptoms were milder than previous infections, resembling a bad cold.

The first infection knocked me down for weeks, followed by about a month of brain fog that was actually quite scary. The second time was a week with a low fever. However, this third time was differentjust a sore throat, fatigue, some brain fog, and body aches, Master told Verywell.

During the first years of the pandemic, common symptoms included sore throat, loss of taste or smell, and fever. As more subvariants emerged, some less obvious symptoms have become more prevalent.

Unusual fatigue, headache, rashes, and digestive issues like nausea and diarrhea could also indicate COVID, according to C. Leilani Valdes, MD, chair of pathology and laboratory medicine at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, TX.

With new variants popping up, its important to recognize these less obvious symptoms. If youre feeling unwell or experiencing something out of the ordinary, I recommend talking to your doctor and getting tested, Valdes told Verywell.

Michael Mina, MD, PhD, a former assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, said newer symptoms are becoming more prominent partly because of a shift in how COVID is being recognized. Gastrointestinal issues are common in COVID cases because the gut lining is full of ACE2, the receptor for the COVID-19 virus.

For many people, the virus will go into the gut but wont necessarily grow in the nose. The nose isnt actually a preferred location for virus replication because its a bit cooler and less hospitable, Mina told Verywell. When this happens, many people will have significant GI symptoms and even respiratory symptoms but may never turn positive on a virus PCR or antigen test.

Valdes emphasized that healthcare providers should pay attention to patients when they bring up less typical symptoms.

Clear and compassionate communication, along with up-to-date information, helps patients understand their symptoms and encourages them to take the right steps for their health and safety, Valdes said.

For Master, while COVID vaccinations have protected him from severe illness, he still takes precautions to protect those around him.

It is on me to ensure I have rapid antigen tests at the ready so I can test myself before family functions and work travel, Master said. Do your due diligence to test yourself, because your family and coworkers may be immunocompromised.

Understanding the evolving nature of COVID-19 symptoms can help you recognize the infection sooner. Stay vigilant about monitoring your health and get tested if you experience unusual symptoms or have been exposed to the virus.

Biden tests positive for Covid-19 – NBC Bay Area

President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 while traveling Wednesday in Las Vegas and is experiencing mild symptoms including general malaise from the infection, the White House said.

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden will fly to his home in Delaware, where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time." The news had first been shared by Unidos US President and CEO Janet Murgua, who told guests at the group's convention in Las Vegas that president had sent his regrets and could not appear because he tested positive for the virus.

Dr. Kevin O'Connor, the president's physician, said in a note that Biden, 81, presented this afternoon with upper respiratory symptoms, to include rhinorhea (runny nose) and non-productive cough, with general malaise. After the positive COVID-19 test, Biden was prescribed the antiviral drug Paxlovid and has taken his first dose, O'Connor said.

Biden was slated to speak at the Unidos event in Las Vegas Wednesday afternoon as part of an effort to rally Hispanic voters ahead of the November election. Instead, he departed for the airport to fly to Delaware, where he had already been planning to spend a long weekend at his home in Rehoboth Beach.

The president's diagnosis comes amid intense scrutiny of his health and stamina after a disastrous debate with former President Donald Trump that sparked aflurry of concernamong Democrats that Biden is not up to the rigors of winning another presidential term.

Biden gingerly boarded Air Force One and told reporters traveling with him, I feel good. The president was not wearing a mask as he walked onto Air Force One.

The president had previously been at the Original Lindo Michoacan restaurant in Las Vegas, where he was greeting diners and sat for an interview with Univision.

Biden has been vaccinated and is current on his recommended annual booster dose for COVID-19. The vaccines have proven highly effective at limiting serious illness and death from the virus, which killed more than 1 million people in the U.S. since the pandemic began in 2020. Paxlovid has been proven to curtail the chances of serious illness and death from COVID-19 when prescribed in the early days of an infection, but has also been associated with rebound infections, where the virus comes back a few days after clearing up.

Biden last tested positive for COVID-19 twice in the summer of 2022, when he had a primary case and a rebound case of the virus.

Health officials have reported recent upticks in emergency room visits and hospitalizations from COVID-19. There has also been a pronounced increase in positive test results in much of the country particularly the southwestern U.S.

President Biden Tests Positive for COVID and Has Mild Symptoms, Cancels Las Vegas Campaign Event – Variety

July 18, 2024

President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced on Wednesday.

Biden canceled a campaign appearance at the convention for UnidosUS, a national civil rights organization for Latinos, in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Earlier today following his first event in Las Vegas, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19, Jean-Pierre said in a statement. He is vaccinated and boosted and he is experiencing mild symptoms. He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time. The White House will provide regular updates on the Presidents status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation.

Bidens doctor, Kevin OConnor, added that the president was administered a dose of Paxlovid and will self-isolate at home.

The President presented this afternoon with upper respiratory symptoms, to include rhinorhea (runny nose) and non-productive cough, with general malaise, OConnor said. He felt okay for his first event of the day, but given that he was not feeling better, point of care testing for COVID-19 was conducted, and the results were positive for the COVID-19 virus. Given this, the President will be self-isolating in accordance with CDC guidance for symptomatic individuals. PCR confirmation testing will be pending. His symptoms remain mild, his respiratory rate is normal at 16, his temperature is normal at 97.8 and his pulse oximetry is normal at 97%. The President has received his first dose of Paxlovid. He will be self-isolating at his home in Rehoboth.

Amid calls for him to step down from the election, Biden has reaffirmed that he will stay in the race and face off against former President Donald Trump. However, in an interview with BET News released Wednesday morning, Biden said that he would only considering stepping aside if a medical condition emerged and doctors urged him to reconsider.

If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you got this problem and that problem, Biden told journalist Eric Gordon. I said I was going to be a transitional candidate, and I thought Id be able to move on from this, pass it on to someone else. But I didnt anticipate things getting so, so, so divided. Quite frankly, I think the only thing age brings [is] a little bit of wisdom, and I think Ive demonstrated that I know how to get things done for the country.

Biden previously tested positive for COVID-19 in July 2022.

Given that the pandemic was declared officially over as of May 5, 2023, public health officials dont collect the same amount of COVID data as they once did.

Since COVID-19 emerged in 2020, scientists have learned that the virus has seasonal patterns, Varma said, with predictable peaks in spring/early summer and winter.

"Winter peaks are easy to explain more people spend time indoors, and there are changes in the climate, including relative humidity, that make it easier for infections to spread through the air," Varma, who served as the New York City mayor's senior adviser for public health during the COVID-19 pandemic, told Fox News Digital.

Its not quite as easy, however, to explain the peak during warmer weather.

"It may be because the virus evolves at a frequency that aligns with the spring/summer or there could be other environmental factors that we do not understand well," Varma said.

As of June 27, the CDC recommends that all people 6 months of age and older get updated 2024-2025 COVID vaccines when they become available in fall 2024.

The updated vaccine will target the new, prevalent subvariants.
